Decorating With Duvet Covers

Here is a short story about duvet covers. It starts with my oldest son back when he was in his 20′s. At that time Duvet was a name that was not in my vocabulary, but he announced one day that he wanted a duvet cover for Christmas. We, of course, went to the local department store for our education where we found a huge monochrome colored bag with a zipper on one end meant to protect an expensive comforter from soiling. The Cover was cheap and the Duvet was really pricey.

Fast forward to today and we find it easy to find comforters which are affordable and durable, and Duvet covers which are elegant, colorful, stylish, beautiful, and classy. In addition, the duvet covers of today have become affordable. Things have changed and Duvet has been re-defined. Companies such as Le Vele, Blancho, Arya, Dophia and a multitude of others are creating duvet ensembles which can take ones breath away with their sheer beauty and elegance.

Of course when you are ready to purchase your duvet ensemble, there are a few things you need to look for. First, if you are going to use your cover over an existing comforter, be sure you have one of the “thin” comforters as the thicker they are, the harder they are to insert into your new duvet cover. You will also want to have a cover which closes easily with snaps or buttons to keep it secure without having to deal with getting the edge of your comforter stuck in an old fashioned zipper.

If colorful bedding is not your cup of tea, simply get a good comforter in white or some neutral color. However, if you are in the decorating mood (and we hope you are) start looking at what is out there in terms of wild or not so wild color and design combinations. Chances are, if you have done so, your head is wildly spinning with ideas. So go ahead and get the one YOU feel is outstanding and enjoy your new look. After all, you spend about 1/3 of your life in that room, so why not live a little and make it beautiful!

If you are still looking, you will want to check on some of the bamboo duvet covers. Not too long ago, comfort and bamboo were opposites. Not so any more. Waking up in a bed with a natural fiber duvet cover is an experience you just have to have!

In closing, you might want to know that the term “duvet” comes from old French and means “cover”. So why do so many sales people and websites refer to the comforter as the duvet? And does it matter? Just don’t let them confuse you. Looking at the the colors and patterns available today, you will easily find a duvet cover set to fit your dream bedroom. In fact, you might find yourself inviting your next house guests into your bedroom for a “quick tour” of what you have done with your decorating skills.
